This summer, Groundswell Community Mural Project, a NYC-based, 501(c)(3), has brought together professional artists, youth, and community organizations to create a mural on a wall outside of the Brooklyn Detention Complex on State Street in Downtown Brooklyn. The theme of this project, Restorative Justice, will consider what it means to live restoratively, through a design that represents the collective identity of Brooklyn as expressed through the creation of modern mandalas. The mural will be designed and painted by a team of 15-20 youth, 2 professional artists, and volunteers. This project, which is presented in partnership with the New York City Department of Corrections, will give the youth a chance to explore this important issue and express themselves through a piece of public art.
